It’s always nice to see a couple having a successful long-term relationship or marriage, which can make some people wonder what they could be doing differently to keep their union so strong. Well, for one, these couples understand that good communication is vital to a strong relationship and make it their top priority. In my role as a relationship counselor, I often come across such couples who share their communication secrets with me and which you too can apply to your own relationship.

Communicate Often: Make communicating with your better half a part of your daily routine. By communicating with each other on a regular basis, you can address issues as soon as they come up and prevent them from building up.

Be Open-Minded: Try to look at things from your partner’s perspective even if you disagree over something. Giving importance to each other’s opinions and feelings creates a feeling of being backed, supported and validated.

Speak From the Heart: Be honest while communicating instead of always saying only what your partner wants to hear. Remember, a solid relationship is built on the foundation of honesty and openness.

Accept Responsibility: Successful couples don’t hesitate to accept responsibility and own up to their mistakes. Becoming defensive or playing the blame game can only damage a relationship. Everyone makes mistakes, so just go ahead and say you’re sorry to generate forgiveness.

Laugh More: Apart from being good for your emotional and physical health, laughter is also good for relationships as it brings a couple closer and creates intimacy. Use laughter as a tool to manage conflict and reduce tension.

Agree to Disagree: Successful couples may disagree with each other more often, but don’t smile and nod all the time. As a couple, you just can’t have a consensus on everything and its okay if you don’t see eye-to-eye. Learning to truly accept your dissimilarities will only strengthen your relationship as a couple.

Be Fully Supportive: Feeling supported is a crucial part of any successful relationship. A supportive relationship helps a couple go through rough times, enjoy the good times and demand more of themselves, thus improving the quality of the results achieved from being together.
